Dear Member,

ESG Investing has moved centre stage in the asset management industry. Boards must address how their companies should be meeting client and regulatory expectations. It is a complex and evolving journey with few simple answers.

The Association established the ESG working group to provide guidance on the key issues for independent directors.

 ESG Survey Report

We are proud to share with you our inaugural ESG Survey Report.  This document contains the results of a survey and follow up interviews with independent directors who had experience of dealing with fund Board discussions of ESG issues. It  was designed to provide insights on the key issues from the perspective of independent directors. It incorporates  key information about the regulations and associated timelines. It contains feedback and experiences from our INED members, including  what Boards are doing right now and what they need to look out for in the future and by when.

ESG webinar on 10th of December

The IFDA will host an  ESG webinar on Friday the 10th of December 2021 at 10am. It will be a panel session moderated by Hazel O’Flynn who will be joined by our panellists Kathy Ryan (Head of Responsible Investment, Irish Life Investment Management (ILIM), Laura Heuston (Director and Co-Founder Sustainability Works) and Shane Coman (IFDA Council, Membership Affairs).  Registration for the event can be found here or through the IFDA website. If you have any questions or topics that you would like addressed in the webinar, please feel free to reach out to the working group. Their contact details can be found in the ESG Survey Report.

Upcoming deadlines

Under the Taxonomy Regulation, from 1 January 2022, funds will have to make prescribed pre-contractual and periodic disclosures.  This is relevant whether the funds are classified as  Article 6, Article 8 or Article 9 SFDR products.   A link to CBI’s Q&A is included in the report together with information about the process for the  fast-track filing. The deadline for making submissions under the fast track procedure is 14 December 2021. The Central Bank has also introduced a fast track process and filing date for compliance with SFDR RTS – this will be from 31 March 2022 to 27 May 2022.

We hope you will find the report valuable and we would welcome all comments as we look for ways that independent directors can enhance their contribution in the ESG space. Many thanks in advance from the IFDA ESG working group: Lisa Martensson, Hazel O’Flynn, Aedin O’Leary, Paul Turpin, Lesley Williams, Muiris O’Dwyer, Deirdre O’Reilly and John Opperman.

 Kind regards,

Lisa Martensson
